Three Men Condemned to Life in Prison for Murdering Ahmaud Arbery

After being found guilty in November, Ahmaud Arbery was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black Georgian man.

George McMichael or Travis McMichael won’t be eligible to parole. Travis McMichael, the man who shot Arbery while he was running in their neighborhood in February 2020, was Travis McMichael. William “Roddie”Bryan Jr. will be eligible to parole. Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley handed down the sentences.

After two days of jury deliberation, the three white men were convicted in November.

Notably, the McMichaels were also indicted on three separate federal hate crime charges. Their federal trial is scheduled for February. If convicted of these charges (interference with rights and attempted kidnapping, using, carrying and brandishing a firearm during or in relation to a crime involving violence), they could face additional punishments.

Bryan was released in November from the malice murder charge. However, he was also charged with federal hate crimes, such as interference with rights and attempted kidnapping. He has pleaded guilty to these charges. He could face additional penalties if convicted.

Arbery, who was out for a run in the Satilla Shores area of Brunswick, Georgia, was shot and killed by Travis McMichaels on February 23, 2020. A white father and son — the McMichaels — began following Arbery in their pick-up truck before the son, Travis, fired three shots at Arbery, killing him. Bryan, who was also following Arbery with another vehicle, recorded the incident.

It wasn’t until May of last year, three months after Arbery’s death, that theMcMichaelsandRyanwere arrestedAnd charged with murder.
