Do you have an interest in Korea? This series of 8 episodes is a fascinating look into how young Koreans interact in a romantic setting. Here’s the thing: Korea is very different from the US. It was not sexualized in the West, despite the way it was promoted. Like, Netflix’s. Too Hot to Handle.
There was one kiss in all of the series. And it was literally a peck on the cheek — one that made the male recipient swoon, nonetheless. Hand-holding is a big deal for Koreans, as I discovered. It is called, according to what I understand, “handholding”. “skinship.”It’s a comparison of apples to oranges. This is a reference to handholding being comparable with more of the intimacy a couple might expect in the US. But this is not to suggest that hand-holding should be considered as equal to more intimate physical contact. Single’s InfernoWas prudish, or too chaste. It was refreshingly different.

The show’s contestants begin by living on an isolated island. “inferno.” That basically just means they’re living close to the elements — minus the creature comforts we’re all used to. You will be challenged with a variety of games each day. The contestants can choose to pair up or go on a date with someone they like. Is this for someone like me, who is part of the Western audience? Single’s InfernoIt certainly satisfied a travel-related desire to explore more of the world. The show also featured a lot more genuine emotion and a desire for connection than I expected in a dating show. Many people, including myself, have expressed their hope for a Netflix follow-up episode. Maybe there will be a special episode called “Where are They Now?”
Or even better, a second season.
