The founder of travel tipster site One Mile At A Time pointed out that any hot food being ordered on plane is a reheat job – as all the dishes are prepared on the ground before take-off.

And knowing that means being able to decide which foods reheat best so the meal is as delicious as when first made.

He also mentioned that when flying with an airline that’s known for have “good quality food” then the signature dish is a no-brainer.

He said: “I think it’s important to consider the realities of airplane food.

“Food isn’t cooked on planes, but rather the food is prepared in a catering facility many hours before you actually consume it, and is then reheated in the galley.”

To tackle the food plight that overseas travellers are lumbered with, he advised that it’s best to think of the options on the menu as “leftovers”, mentioning that you should treat it like you would when taking a doggy-bag home.

He then advised that there is one type of plate-load that’s worth “indulging” in if the airline is known for it.

He said “I think it’s worth indulging in a carrier’s signature dish, or a dish the carrier is known for. For example, Singapore Airlines’ satay is delicious.”

Another good way to avoid a dodgy tasting dish is to take a look at the cold options – admitting that it could be as good as the one you could have bought before taking off.

He said: “Emirates’ unlimited first-class caviar service comes to mind as an example of that.”

But the tips didn’t stop there as he went on to talk about main courses, what to eat on a domestic flight, and a particular food that’s probably best to be ignored.

He said: “I tend to think that it’s often worth just avoiding the main courses…even on top airlines, main courses just typically aren’t much to get excited about.”

The travel tipster said that it’s “challenging” to get a good fish dish on a plane, so if there’s a different option then you’ll likely have a better time with that.

However, Matt’s views differ when flying domestically, the expert said to just “go for the simple option”.
