  • It was a simple experiment. I made a chai syrup latte to imitate a chai-tea espresso latte.
  • The latte-based “dirty chai”It was less expensive, but it didn’t taste like a dirty Chai.

According to TikTok viral with over 1 million likes, there’s an easy way to get a popular Starbucks drink for cheaper — but that doesn’t mean it’ll taste exactly the same.

Christine Kominek is a former Starbucks barista, and houseguest in season 16 of CBS’s The Bachelor. “Big Brother,”Posted a TikTok Novemberabout how to get a dirty chai for significantly cheaper. A popular beverage made from adding espresso shots to a chai lata, which is a tea-based beverage, is dirty chai.

Kominek says that most people order a grande Chai latte, which includes two shots of espresso. However, it is possible to order a latte containing chai syrup for a cheaper alternative.

Because I love all types of lattes, I tried both orders to determine if they were worth the cost.

To compare the prices and see the ingredients, I ordered both drinks using the Starbucks app

When I ordered at Starbucks, I looked up the ingredients and prices of each drink.

Kominek claimed in her video, that both lattes had the same base price. However, at my local Starbucks, this was not true. I ordered grande sizes, so the plain latte, also called the caffè latte, was $4.45 and the chai-tea latte was $4.75.

Without customizations, the caffè latteIncludes two shots of espresso and steamed 2% Milk. You can customize the chai-tea latteIt is made from four pumps of chai concentrate and water.

The mod latte was more than $1.50 less than the basic dirty Chai.

To match the amount of dirty chai, I added four pumps to my basic latte. This cost an additional 60 cents. $5.05.

Two shots of espresso were added to the chai tea latte. It cost $1.80 more. $6.55.

I was curious about the taste of these drinks, especially as the Chai-tea Latte mixes the chai syrup in water.

The classic dirty Chai featured strong, sweet and spicy notes.

The chai tea latte with espresso was rich and creamy, but I also got plenty of spice.

To balance out the strong flavors, the milk was there. The espresso was not tasted in this drink.

The modified caffè latte was darker in color than the chai-tea latte, but I still expected both drinks to taste the same based on Kominek’s video.

This drink was quite different to the chai-tea with espresso. This latte didn’t have much spice to it.

The modified latte was also less sweetened, had a stronger coffee flavor, and wasn’t as creamy or spicy as dirty chai.

Kominek’s tip not only saved me money but also resulted in two very different tasting drinks

Although both drinks were tasty, the taste was very different.

If I wanted the tea flavor of dirty chai, the chai-tea with espresso would be my choice.

If I want stronger coffee flavors or to save money, the regular latte would have chai syrup. You could add more chai syrup to make the drink stronger, but it’s already quite sugary.
