The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie listings

Whether you’ve never ventured into the imaginative plains of Middle Earth before or you’ve embarked upon the adventure a handful of times, there’s reason to be excited for The Rings of Power either way.

The Amazon Prime Video series was developed by Patrick McKay and J. D. Payne. It is based upon the literary works of JRRTolkien who wrote The Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit novels.

Peter Jackson, a New Zealand filmmaker, adapts these books to screen.

ScreenrantAccording to reports, The Rings of Power season one cost $462 million. This makes it the most expensive series of all time.

It will be a special event. However, you might want to do some research before diving in.

Order of the Lord of the Rings films

The chronological order of The Lord of the Rings movies and The Hobbit movies is listed below:

  • The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey
  • The Hobbit: Smaug’s Desolation
  • The Battle of the Five Armies: The Hobbit
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • The Return of the King: The Lord of the Rings

Although The Hobbit movies were released years after The Return of the King, the trilogy prefigures the events of The Lord of the Rings and the three films are based on JRR Tolkien’s 1937 novel.

The Fellowship of the Ring was first published in 1954.

The Rings of Power is set thousands of years prior to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. With this in mind, you don’t have to have seen either trilogy to understand the show, although it will arguably enrich your experience as all projects take place within the same shared universe.

‘I went back to the books’

J.A. Bayona recently met with ColliderWhen asked how many films he had seen and referred back to when helming The Rings of Power, he replied that he did.

“… You know what, when I think about the Peter Jackson movies, the thing I love and the thing that I admire the most is how great he was in capturing Tolkien’s spirit. So at the end, it’s all about going to the source material and go to the books. So this is what I did. I went back to the books, I read them again, and everything is in there.”

He continued: “You can tell how cinematic Tolkien was when, the way he portrays the landscape reflects the mood of the characters. That’s the kind of style that I love. When I shoot a movie, I try all the time to enhance the story with visual elements and that sense of beauty.”

Amazon Prime Video exclusively streams The Rings of Power.
