Sex Education’s move to a new school in season 4 was brought about as the real-life Moordale filming location is being turned into apartments.
Over the course of its first three seasons, Sex Education made Moordale Secondary its home but things are changing in season 4 as Otis, Eric and the gang will be moving on to pastures new but before they arrive at their new school, we’re here to have a look back at the filming location behind Moordale and what’s become of it since the Netflix series departed.
Sex Education’s Moordale filming location
The majority of Sex Education was filmed on the Caerleon campus in Newport, Wales.
The campus was closed to students in 2016 following the merger of the University or Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport (that’s the Sex Education one) in 2013 which resulted in the newly formed University of South Wales which has since relocated to the Welsh capital, Cardiff.
The crew of Sex Education was able to use the surrounding campus for filming, creating a convincing environment.
And beyond the old university buildings themselves, the campus’s sports hall was also used to house a number of Sex Education’s interior sets, including Otis and Jean Milburn’s house.
Location being converted into homes and apartments
The demolition of a large number of structures on campus began in October of 2021. 218 houses will be built according to an estimate. Reportage South Wales Argus
The site was bought by Redrow Homes for £6.2 million ($7.9 million) who initially planned to begin demolition work in May 2020 but had initial plans rejected.
While several buildings on the site have been torn down, the campus’s Edwardian-era main building, as well as three others, are grade-II listed, meaning they can’t be demolished.
This property developer had planned on converting these buildings to 48 apartments.
Sex Education: A New Frontier
Season 3 of Sex Education, which was likely aware of what would happen to its filming site Moordale, ended in the closing and sale of Moordale following yet another scandal.
As a result, season 4 will see Otis, Eric and a host of ex-Moordale students – but not all – transfer to a new school, Cavendish Sixth Form College.
The first day at Cavendish brings a culture shock, as it is much more forward-thinking and progressive than the old school.
Otis is particularly affected by the move, not only is he pining after Maeve – who is studying in America – he is no longer the only child at home and he’s not the only therapist on campus anymore.
