The 10 Worst ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Episodes Ranked

In 2005 Grey’s AnatomyThe pilot episode aired on ABC for the first-time. The pilot episode. “A Hard Day’s Night,” introduced viewers to Shonda Rhimes’ fictional Seattle Grace/Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Shonda was not a television series from its very first season. Greys Anatomy’s cast, led by Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Grey, could’ve predicted the medical drama’s longevity. In May 2022 Grey’s Anatomy It aired its 400th and 18th seasons finales.

10. Meredith had sex with George while she was still in a relationship with Derek (Season 2, Ep. 8: “Yesterday”).

The first few Grey’s Anatomy seasons focused on Meredith’s surgical internship. Meredith took in two roommates during her internship — Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and George O’ Malley (T.R. Knight). George’s crush on Meredith instantly became apparent to the other interns, including Meredith. But she fell madly in love her attending surgeon, Dr. Derek Shepherd, (Patrick Dempsey).

By Season 2, Meredith and Derek’s romance plummeted when Meredith discovered he was married to Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). In Season 2, Episode 19, Meredith, a broken woman, attempts to heal her wounds by having sex with George. Meredith, who was having sex with George, began to cry while trying to mend her broken heart. The scene was difficult to watch and nearly ruined Meredith and George’s friendship.

9. Izzie and George’s drunken affairs (Season 3, episode 18: “Scars and Souvenirs”).

While we’re on the subject of ruined friendships, we must mention Grey’s AnatomyIt is a way to destroy a seemingly perfect relationship between two people from opposite sexes. After drinking too much alcohol, Izzie and George take their friendship further. Izzie learns that George and she had sex while drunk at the end. The episode not only changed Izzie and George’s relationship by giving us one of Grey’s worst pairings but also made George an adulterer. That season, he was married to Dr. Callie Torres.

8. Alex Karev believed he had gotten his patient pregnant (Season 4, Ep. 13: “Piece of My Heart”).

Another early opportunity Grey’s AnatomyAlex Karev, a doctor who was unable to find love, was Justin Chambers. Alex was reunited with his former patient Ava (Elizabeth Reser) in Season 4. Ava, who had lost her memory in a ferry boat accident, left Seattle in Season 4. After she returned to Seattle, she changed her name to Rebecca and claimed she was pregnant with Alex.

Once he discovered she was pregnant, Alex immediately stepped up to be by Ava’s side. However, Izzie soon found that Ava wasn’t pregnant and possibly suffered from mental health issues. Many fans felt that Alex was unnecessarily cruel in the episode and subsequent storyline.

7. Teddy revisits her and Owen’s toxic relationship (Season 17, Ep. 9: “In My Life”).

Season 17 Grey’s AnatomyThis was a difficult one. The medical drama focused on the COVID-19 epidemic, which was real and many fans did not enjoy watching it on a show. Meredith was diagnosed with COVID in that season. The show focuses on the other doctors at the hospital.

In one episode, Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) faced a nightmare about her friend-turned-baby-daddy, Owen. Before COVID began, Teddy had a secret affair with Owen (Greg Germann). The couple called off their wedding. During their breakup, Teddy reflected on her and Owen’s past and the other traumas she endured, such as the death of her best friend, Allison.

The episode didn’t sit well with fans who feared it might be another case of Teddy and Owen’s on-again, off-again dynamic. However, it turned out that this was not the case. 6. Derek convinces Meredith, her mentor Richard Webber, to fire her (Season 6, episode 12: “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked.”)

Season 6 saw Chief Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), fall into difficult times. Richard began drinking again at work after Seattle Grace experienced financial problems. Derek believed Richard was back intoxicated and confided in Meredith. Meredith confirmed that Richard had been drinking again during the season.

After Meredith admitted Richard had been drinking, Derek suggested they tell the hospital’s medical board. Derek also desired Richard’s title so the timing seemed suspicious. Derek convinced Meredith to tell Richard in return for Izzie’s job. This was after she had been fired in Season 6, Episode 5.“Invasion”). Meredith agreed reluctantly and handed her father figure over.

5. The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ doctors sang in the show’s musical episode (Season 7, Episode 18: “Song Beneath the Song”).

Season 7. Grey’s AnatomyThe first-ever episode of a musical was broadcast to the public. “Song Beneath the Song.” During the episode, the doctors fight to save Callie’s life after she and her partner, Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), get into a horrific car accident.

Callie was not the only doctor who found himself on the other side. “Song Beneath the Song” was the only one that included the doctors’ singing chops. Some of the solo acts included doctors Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). Although we didn’t hate the concept, the episode is one that many fans wish didn’t exist. 4. Cristina didn’t win the Harper Avery during her final season (Season 10 Episode 20) “Go It Alone”).

Season 10 was Dr. Cristina Yang’s (Sandra Oh) final year at Grey-Sloan Memorial. While Cristina didn’t choose to leave Seattle in the episode, it was the beginning of the end of her run. After Cristina’s work was nominated, Cristina attended Harper Avery Awards. Cristina was accompanied by Meredith and Owen, her ex-husband who is sometimes her lover, as she waited for the announcer.

3. Maggie does a lot of things to her cousin, and she eventually kills her (Season 16, episode 7: “Papa Don’t Preach”).

Season 10 Grey’s AnatomyDr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), moved to Seattle to find out more about Meredith. Maggie’s appearance shocked many fans who believed up until then that Meredith’s mother, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), only had one child. However, Maggie — who was conceived during Ellis’s affair with Richard — revealed she had been put up for adoption after Ellis gave birth to her, which Ellis had kept secret from Richard and Meredith until she died of Alzheimer’s in Season 3.

In Season 16, Meredith/Sabi had made a good adjustment to their new family. However, the bond changed when Richard’s niece, Sabrina/Sabi (Crystal McCreary)She arrived in Seattle with a serious heart condition. A cardiothoracic surgeon, Maggie tried to convince her new cousin to let her operate on her heart against her and her father Chris’s (Matt Orduna) initial wishes. 2. Alex sends a letter saying goodbye to Meredith, Grey-Sloan (Season 16, episode 16: “Leave a Light On”).

Season 16 saw Alex as one of the few Grey-Sloan doctors at the hospital. He decided to close his chapter and ended his time at the hospital that season by writing a letter. Justin’s January 2020 departure was the catalyst for this conclusion.

In Season 16, Episode 16“Leave a Light On”Alex sent goodbye letters to Meredith Bailey and Richard (and his wife Dr. Jo Wilson). Alex wrote that he moved to Iowa with Izzie eleven years after his divorce from Seattle. She seemed to be getting on her feet again years later and was now dating Alex. In Season 5, Denny’s ghost surfaced, repeatedly telling Izzie he was “here” for her. Despite being freaked out by her dead fiancé’s resurgence, Izzie eventually felt fortunate to have Denny back in her life. So much so that they did something they didn’t do when Denny was alive: have sex.
