FLUSHED holidaymakers were hit by travel chaos at Luton Airport after runway MELTED was closed due to scorching temperatures.
The airport was forced to cancel flights, causing chaos for families traveling during summer holidays.
Luton confirmed that there was a “surface defect”Because of today’s hot weather.
“Due to today’s extreme temperatures, a surface problem was found on the runway,” stated the airport.
“Engineers were immediately called to the site, and repairs are in progress to resume operations as quickly as possible.
“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
According to reports, the airport has only one runway.
It occurs as the sweltering heat closes schools across the country and causes widespread travel delays.
The runway is also “melted” at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire today as the UK struggled to cope with the weather.
Brits are being asked to stay indoors today as the mercury reaches 37.5C at Kew Gardens, West London.
Meanwhile, popular attractions including Chester Zoo in Cheshire, Maldon Promenade Zoo in Essex and York Maze in North Yorkshire have all shut due to the heat.
