Max was undoubtedly one of the most captivating characters in all four Stranger Things episodes.
Having originally appeared as somewhat of a loner in series 2, Max’s character has progressed into one of the show’s main stars. She is a fan favorite.
The storyline of Series 4 was particularly captivating, with co-creator Ross DufferMax could even be described as the “The” “emotional centre of the season”.
Fans have been left wondering about Max as we leave with another cliffhanger.
An exciting climax
Fans had been waiting three years for Stranger Things Series 4, and there was a lot of hype about it.
They got one. Well, we’d say so. Max took a ride on a rollercoaster for almost two and a quarter hours.
Max was a hero for offering herself to Vecna so that the rest can try to kill him in the real world. A good idea, but it obviously didn’t go down as easily as that.
Max had to confess her darkest thoughts to Vecna in order to fool her. Lucas, who has been possessed by Vecna, does not react well.
Max is subsequently attacked by Vecna and although it isn’t immediately clear if she is dead or not, Lucas later reveals more about her condition.
Is Max brain dead?
What happened to Max then?
Well, as Lucas reveals, Max technically did die – but only clinically. She actually somehow manages to make a comeback, to the doctor’s surprise.
Max may not be happy.
Despite her not technically passing away in Series 4 of Stranger Things, co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer have confirmed it’s not looking good for Max.

So, unfortunately, yes – Max is brain dead.
Max will appear in season 5.
So, if there’s any consolation, it looks like Max will be in season 5. This, after the battle with Vecna made it seem unlikely at first.
But in what capacity? That, we don’t know. If Max’s condition is truly as bad as the creators make it out to be, then Max may offer very little to season 5.
Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out. It’s expected that the wait between series 4 and 5 will be a lot shorter than the three-year gap between series 3 and 4, with the final series potentially dropping in 2023.
