Square Enix releases its first Final Fantasy NFT

SQUARE Enix released its first NFT, an action figure of Final Fantasy 7’s protagonist Cloud Strife.

The publisher sold three major studios in May allegedly in order to invest into blockchain gaming.

Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal, were sold to the Embracer Group alongside its popular IPs.

This includes Thief (Legacy of Kain), Deus Ex, Deus Ex, as well as the most popular Tomb Raider franchise.

Yesterday, it was announced that the company had invested up to $35million (£30million) in a Bitcoin startup.

New merchandise is now available through the Square EnixNFTs can be purchased at a store.

Cloud Strife can be purchased in action wearing the outfit from the FF7 Remake with his buster sword.

There are two versions. The regular version costs $129 (£110) but the digital plus version including NFTs costs $30 (£25) more.

The figure comes in a box with a code, which allows buyers to download both a digital certificate and a digital version.

Both of these are stored on Enjin’s Efinity blockchain and are therefore forms of NFTs.

In order to access the NFTs those who buy the figure have to download Enjin’s NFT Platform app.

The store also warns customers that Enjin will close down and they will not be able to access their NFTs.

Blockchains, NFTs, cryptocurrency, and other forms of crypto are all well-known for their high energy consumption and being environmentally insensitive.

Final Fantasy 7 is about Cloud fighting against the Shinra corporation that suckers life force from the planet.

Square Enix also has two versions of another Cloud figure.

These figures depict Cloud in the dress and wig he wears to win over Don Corneo.

The static figure with Cloud posing demurely as if standing in front of Don costs $199 (£167), and the moveable action figure version will cost $5 less.

Pre-orders for these figures are now available. However, they will not be available until November 2023.
