SPOILERS: Echoes ending explained

Netflix has unleashed a fascinating mystery on its viewers. There’s another one.

While the streaming platform has provided many compelling thrillers this year, Echoes is still at the forefront of attention.

The series was created by Vanessa Gazy and features identical twins Leni Gazy and Gina. Michelle Monaghan plays Gina. Both have been secretly sharing their lives since childhood. They share homes, husbands and other things.

When one is missing, things get more complicated.

Now that you’ve worked through the series, let’s dive deeper into how things come together…

A quick recap

Gina receives a call from her twin sister Leni’s husband telling her she’s missing. However, it’s revealed that the one who’s actually missing is Gina, who hatched a plan to disappear so she could have a baby with her high school sweetheart Dylan.

They had a difficult upbringing, and they pursued many different paths. However, Gina lost her baby and Gina came up with the idea to swap lives in an attempt to save Gina.

Along the way, it’s revealed that Charlie knew that his wife Gina had been swapping with Leni.

This eventually led to a fallout which saw her re-encounter Dylan. Newsweek notes.

Echoes ending explained

Plunged into the finale, Gina and Leni flee their childhood house as it’s set ablaze and their father Victor remains inside after already suffering fatally from a heart condition.

Gina believes wholeheartedly that she’s been under Leni’s thumb for her entire life and desperately wants out of the bond they’ve forged. She even tried to kill Dylan in order to keep her close.

Gina hears Leni say to Gina in the woods, that she hopes they will stick together again as a team.

However, Gina isn’t going down without a fight so the two clash in a river, which leads to Leni confessing that she saw their father drown their mother years prior. These flashbacks make sense.

However, Gina telling Leni that he drowned them because she asked him to. She was severely ill and wanted to die at her husband’s hands, rather than succumbing further to illness.

This kills Leni, as the hidden information has dominated her entire life. Gina leaps off the waterfall, likely to kill her. Alternatively, viewers may recall that she had previously learned how to dive.

Leni, who is suspected of the death at the church that was alluded earlier, escapes to Australia using a fake identity. While there, it’s revealed a woman who looked just like her was there days earlier, suggesting that Gina survived the fall and fled too.

‘Maybe I don’t even know anymore’

We find ourselves at the book reading for a novel Charlie wrote about his relationship with Leni, Gina and others. One of them arrives there but it’s uncertain which and they ask while disguised if Gina’s body was recovered.

She later shows up at Charlie’s and he asks her if she was at the reading. She says no but Charlie insists that he’ll find out which one she is of the two.

“Maybe,”She responded. “Maybe I don’t even know anymore.”

She then argues that there are things she needs to settle and she’s going to start with him.

It is not clear which of the women it might be, but that is intentional. Does it really matter, as the woman suggests? Have they finally become one and the same after all they’ve been through?

With a show tackling ideas of identity crisis so head-on, it’s a satisfying yet open-ended conclusion to a limited series.

Echoes can now be viewed on Netflix.
