A beloved character is left fighting for his life on an upcoming episode of Casualty as a big star returns to the drama to pay his respects. The stabbing of Charlie Fairhead rocked the hospital last week, and new scenes will see staff realizing that his injury is more serious than they thought.

The long-time nurse drifts in and out of consciousness as staff rush to sew him up, and starts having flashbacks to his earlier days on the ward. He remembers arriving at Holby City hospital 37 years ago as a young man, hungover but full of high hopes.

At her retirement party charge nurse Shirley warned him he would have to step up his game to land a permanent position. He then got his first chance to prove himself when a nail bomb went off, and the hospital was filled with victims.

Meanwhile Stevie has an argument with Zoe over what the best way to treat Charlie is, which interferes with his care. Dylan takes Zoe’s side, and the emergency consultant walks away from the situation, wondering if she is mentally stable enough to continue working.

Stevie confides in Faith, telling her that she is second-guessing her medical decisions and worried that she will be responsible for the death of a patient. Faith reassures her that she is very competent, but Stevie still has doubts.

At this point Mel is finally discovered in critical condition after her car accident. Stevie is forced to put her fears aside to stabilize her at the scene of the accident. Bac in the hospital Charlie is still experiencing flashbacks from the start of his career.

He is seen comforting a panicked young girl whose father was injured by the bombing – and she is later revealed to be present day clinical lead Stevie. As he recalls supporting her as a child and helping to track down her dad, Stevie frantically tries to find out if he is bleeding internally from the stab wound.

She sees him deteriorating rapidly while waiting for surgery and realizes she might be the only person who can save him. Show bosses have revealed that fan-favorite paramedic Josh Griffiths (Ian Bleasdale) will make a reappearance on the show as staff become concerned about losing one of their nearest and dearest. Casualty airs weekly on Saturday nights at BBC One.
