Sex Education season 4 funeral song is 'simply art' and stealing hearts

HITC highlights the Sex Education season 4 funeral song as audiences react to one of the beloved coming-of-age show’s most memorable moments. Hearts were inevitably going to be broken ever since it was announced the fourth would be the final season.

One thing that Sex Education has always been championed for is its pitch-perfect soundtrack and season 4 certainly refuses to break tradition in that regard. A number of moments feel expertly accompanied by terrific music, but perhaps no scene in the Netflix show’s return is more wonderfully soundtracked than the funeral of Maeve‘s mother Erin, but what is the Sex Education season 4 funeral song?

Sex Education season 4 funeral song

The song that plays at Maeve’s mother’s funeral in Sex Education season 4 episode 6 is the iconic ballad With Or Without You by U2.

It’s track 3 on the Irish rock band’s fifth studio album The Joshua Tree released in 1987.

Maeve chose it because Erin loved the song. Unfortunately, there are wifi issues and the song cuts out before it can properly begin, putting the funeral in even more jeopardy fuelled by an insensitive and underprepared Samantha orchestrating the speech and a disastrous appearance from Sean.

Fortunately, on the other hand, Colin saves the day and steps up to the plate by performing a rendition of With Or Without You on the piano, encouraging the funeral attendees to sing along and make the service something truly special.

With Or Without You was a great choice to help illustrate Maeve and Erin’s relationship, serving as a love song about a torturous relationship with someone you love so much but who can be so bad for you that you can neither live with nor without them.

‘This song is simply art’

The song choice has earned a number of heartfelt reactions from Sex Education fans on Twitter.

“I think it’s wonderful that they played this song for a microsecond for Maeve’s mother’s funeral,” one began writing, “the first time I heard it was on friends when Ross asked Rachel to forgive him, this song is simply art.”

Sex Education’s Laurie Nunn is ‘so proud’

Sex Education creator Laurie Nunn reflected on how far the cast and crew have come since season 1 during an interview with Elle.

“I feel like we’re all so proud of them, it just feels like we’ve all come so far since series 1,” she gushed.

“I mean our casting director, Lauren Evans, has worked magic, because she’s found a group of the most brilliant people, and it’s been such a pleasure to get to mould these characters around these new faces and get to watch them develop as their characters do.”

It’s safe to say that the fandom would happily take a fifth season, but the fourth and final is sure to cement the show a remarkable legacy.

Sex Education season 4 now streaming on Netflix.
