Secret Headquarters is based on comics and graphic novels?

When it comes to our favourite superheroes, our minds may often go straight to Batman, Wonderwoman, Spider-Man, Captain America… the most iconic. However, there’s so much more to the genre than the usual suspects of DC and Marvel.

As the superhero phenomenon continues to thrive, it’s hardly surprising that audiences are seeing more and more caped crusaders and powerful villains coming to their screens.

However, not all of them are familiar and audiences will be compelled to peel back the curtain on Secret Headquarters, an American blockbuster starring Owen Wilson and Michael Peña. It may have superheroes, but you’re sure not going to recognise them like you would Thor or Hulk.

Secret Headquarters does not draw its inspiration from comics or graphic novels. It is, however, clearly inspired by other products in the wider superhero genre.

Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the American movie is based on a story conceived by Christopher L. Yost, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay alongside Josh Koenigsberg, Henry Joost, and Ariel Schulman.

Paramount+ released the film on Friday, August 12, 2022. The film follows Charlie Kincaid, a young boy who discovers the secret headquarters beneath his home. He also learns that his father was actually living a double life: superhero and family man.

Although an original movie, it’s worth acknowledging that Christopher has worked as a writer on such previous MCU efforts as Thor: The Dark World Thor: Ragnarok.

‘Comedy comes from so many angles in this picture’

Jessie Mueller plays Lily Kincaid and is one of its central stars. She chatted with me about her greatest surprise during filming, as well as the challenges she faced. CBR:

“I think the real-time juggling of dark, violent moodiness and comedy lives in the dialogue. Holding both of those and honoring both of those elements at the same time was probably not exactly what I anticipated. Keeping them both afloat at the same time until we really got on there on the day…”

She continued: “… just playing around with dialogue with Michael and I… Comedy comes from so many angles in this picture, but we have to keep driving the stakes that propelled these kids into their action. So you have to keep that, but also, because of the genre, leave room for it to be kind of mocked.”
