Season 7: Why the Masked Singer's Take it Off Buzzer Should Not Return

Warning! Warning! The Masked Singer’s “Group B Semi-Final.”You are responsible for your actions.

The Masked SingerTwo more competitors were sent home in the Group B semi-final. However, one of them almost won the boot earlier. The CaterpillarWho was the host of the show? Queer Eye design guy Bobby BerkHe was almost sent home earlier than expected (he was also eliminated with the Mallard, a.k.a. Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson) in the night when panelist Jenny McCarthyShe convinced herself that he was an actor Jake Gyllenhaal. McCarthy pressed Take It Off Buzzer. It worked much like Ken Jeong Nothing happened when I pressed it the week before. With the feature going 0-2 in its inaugural season, I think it’s time to Use this gimmickOut to pasture before Season 7.

Fox’s singing competition introduces a lot of new gimmicks from season to season, and some are better than others. I don’t understand the appeal of Take It Off Buzzer. It was only there for the benefit of panelists. This isn’t to say that shows shouldn’t make the game more entertaining, but it also begs the question: Is the audience truly invested in who will win the Golden Ear trophy.

As The Masked SingerIf they are certain about the identity of a contestant, panelists can only hit the buzzer for each group once. If correct, they’d get 2 points towards their Golden Ear trophy, but if wrong, they’d receive a punishment. It sounded great in theory but it was a terrible gimmick. Execution fails to meet expectations.

The Masked SingerIt is about Guessing the identities behind the masks of celebrities, but it’s also a singing competition. Giving the panel an opportunity to potentially unseat a contestant not voted out by the audience is dangerous, especially if they’re one of The greatest singersThe season. As we have a tendency to get enough questionable eliminations during a season, I was not on board for the possibility of another via the Take It Off Buzzer.

Unfortunately, neither panelist was close to being right with their guesses, making the entire exercise seem like a waste. This is especially true for fans who participate in sleuthing out celebrities’ identities throughout the season, who knew Ken Jeong and Jenny McCarthy were well off the money on their guessing. I feel like the twist would entertain the studio audience but not viewers like me at my home. I’m not upsetThe Masked Singer tried it, but it’s definitely something I’d suggest the series not bring back in Season 7 or future seasons.

The Masked SingerSeason 6 is still on the horizon More on FoxWednesdays at 8 p.m. ET. ET.
