The sporting world was stunned when Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, acting duo, announced their intention to purchase Wrexham AFC.

The pair are documenting their time in charge with a series titled Welcome to Wrexham which details Ryan and Rob’s efforts behind the scenes as well as the team’s endeavours on the pitch.

The first two episodes introduce Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to their journey of purchasing a football club in another country. They also share their experiences of meeting up for the first time and learning a lot about the game.

Unsurprisingly, the proposed takeover becomes the talk of the footballing world but the deal isn’t open and shut as the acting duo must convince Wrexham’s fans to allow their purchase to go through.

Eventually, the takeover is confirmed and Ryan and Rob become Wrexham’s new owners in February 2021 and attention quickly turns to matters at the club itself which lies in the fifth tier of the football pyramid.

The reality quickly becomes apparent as the challenges of managing a team in such a low league league system are obvious.

And following an unsuccessful end to the 2020/21 season, change is afoot at as the team’s manager, his staff, and a host of players are released, ushering in the chance for Ryan and Rob to truly make their mark.

Prior to the takeover, the club had been owned by the Wrexham Supporters Trust, the club’s own fans, meaning that when Ryan and Rob proposed their takeover, it was subject to a vote of the Trust’s members.

Once the takeover had been voted through by 98.6% of members, the £2 million that Ryan and Rob paid was invested directly into the club to help its efforts on and off the field.

However, if the acting duo are to be successful in taking Wrexham up the leagues, they’ll almost certainly have to invest more of their money into the club in the years to come.
