New Tatler Portrait of Princess Kate Sparks Backlash Among Royal Fans

Have you seen the latest portrait of the Princess of Wales unveiled by Tatler? The princess’ supporters and enthusiasts are up in arms over the depiction.

Outcry Over British-Zambian Artist’s Portrayal of Princess Kate

Royal admirers are less than impressed with Tatler’s depiction of the Princess of Wales. The portrait was inspired by the princess’ appearance at a state banquet in 2022, donning a white Jenny Packham gown and a blue sash.

“Sorry, as much as I love that you have the Princess of Wales on the cover, that looks nothing like her,” lamented one fan on X after the magazine’s July issue release.

Another concurred, stating, “It’s a no from me, as much as I admire the time and effort expended, the dress, the background, it is not Princess Catherine’s face.”

This incident marks the latest in a string of displeasures expressed by royal enthusiasts. For instance, King Charles’ official portrait release raised eyebrows due to the clashing red theme, with critics branding it as “horrific” and “creepy.”

The Telegraph’s Chief Art Critic Weighs In on Princess Kate’s Portrait

The portrait of the Princess of Wales featured in Tatler, neither commissioned nor sanctioned by Kensington Palace, was crafted by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor. Uzor described her goal with the portrait as capturing the person’s essence.

However, critics like The Telegraph’s Chief Art Critic, Alastair Sooke, were unimpressed. Sooke’s scathing evaluation labeled the depiction as “egregiously, intolerably, jaw-hits-the-floor bad.”

Further dissecting the portrait, Sooke criticized Uzor for transforming one of the world’s most enchanting women into a lifeless figure, drained of allure and charisma. He expressed dismay over the portrayal’s lack of charm and presence, deeming it a far cry from the intended strength and dignity.
