The popular sitcom on ABC is now being sued.

Only a day after the awards nods were revealed, Quinta Brunson and the comedy’s home network were hit with a lawsuit filed by writer and actress Christine Davis, according to Radar Online. Davis claims that the school-centric concept was copied in the court filing. This School YearShe specifically accused all involved of copyright infringement. She is reportedly demanding that Brunson, ABC and all other parties involved in the Emmy-nominated program cease making any profits.

According to the filing, Christine Davis created the script in 2018 after which she registered it with United States Copyright Office on March 2020. She allegedly met with Shavon Wright of Blue Park Productions and Cherisse Parks about the script during these meetings. The producers allegedly told Davis that ABC, Hulu and Hulu were interested to see Black female-led comedy. Wright and Parks allegedly took the teacher-centric series to Hulu, but it never happened. ABC announced that production would resume in September 2020, after the platform was allegedly abandoned. Abbott had started, with the Janine Teagues actress credited as the series’ creator.

It is also stated that the series by the writer was a mockumentary about the faculty and staff of a New York City public high school. In this series, the principal hires a crew to film the daily workflow. It is also claimed that Ms. David was the main character. “young, idealistic teacher hoping to get tenure but also trying to convince everyone that the school needs to be reformed.”
