Pussy Riot will be releasing their debut mixtape. Matriarchy NowNeon Gold Records, Aug. 5. A new song was released by the Russian protest art group, which previewed the release. “Plastic,”These are the features ILoveMakonnen.
The pop-laden song comes along with a music video directed Haley Bowman. This video shows the musicians being formed from literal plastic, evoking punkrock Barbie dolls.
Tove Lo is the executive producer of the mixtape. There are also collaborations with Salem Ilese and Kito.
“Plastic” follow Pussy Riot’s latest political action on June 9, when the collective hung a 45-foot “Matriarchy Now”Banner on the third floor, Texas State Capitol, to protest the attack on reproductive rights in the United States.
Pussy Riot — a loosely organized feminist collective of artists and activists — first came to prominence in 2012 when five members, including Alyokhina, staged a controversial guerilla performance of the group’s anti-Putin song “Punk Prayer: Mother of God Drive Putin Away” in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Alyokhina was arrested along with Nadezhda Tlokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and were convicted. “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.”
Maria Alyokhina, a member of the group, described how she managed to escape Russia disguised as a food courier in May. In the past year, she was arrested and imprisoned six times. This was primarily because of her involvement in antigovernment protests. She decided to flee.
Pussy Riot will perform live at Outside Lands Music + Arts Festival in San Francisco in August, followed by a show at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre. The group is also on the bill for Vancouver’s Rifflandia Festival and Las Vegas’ Life Is Beautiful Festival in September.
