Netflix announced a slate Chinese-language series and films, with fantasy series leading the charge. Agent From AboveThe streamer states that it is. “boasts extensive visual effects that are seldom seen in a local series”.
Produced with Singapore’s mm2 Entertainment and Taiwan’s Good Films Production, the series is set against an oriental universe of “gods, monsters, humans and ghosts”. This story is about a former drug addict who is enlisted to perform the bidding of San Tai Zi, the legendary Chinese god.
The series stars Kai Ko, a Taiwanese actor, and also features Hsueh Shu-ling, Buffy Chen, Johnny Yang, Wang Po-Chieh, and Hsueh Shihling. Donnie Lai directs with Good Films’ Rita Chuang as the lead producer.
“We’re committed to investing in and creating high-quality Chinese-language shows that we know will appeal to more audiences in Taiwan and around the world,”Jerry Zhang, Netflix’s Chinese content manager, stated that the company is committed to providing Chinese-language content. “We hope our projects will uplift the entertainment industry in Taiwan and introduce local stories to the world through our global platform.”
Netflix has also acquired Hong Kong’s highest-grossing film of all time – sci-fi action drama Warriors Of FutureVFX master Ng Yuenfai directed the film and starred Louis Koo and Carina Lau. The film broke all records in Hong Kong when it was released theatrically this summer. It will now be streamable on Netflix starting December 2.
The streamer’s upcoming Chinese offerings also include Taiwanese LGBTQ+ series The Nipple TalkThis series explores the struggle of three friends from different sexual orientations to find love. Sequoia Entertainment produces the series. It stars Lin Szuyu, Bryan Chang and Kaiser Chuang.
Rounding out the slate are two previously announced thriller mysteries, produced with Taiwan’s Greener Grass Production – Copycat KillerThis adaptation of the Miyabe Miyuki crime novel and the second season, “The Second Season of” is an adaptation. The Victims’ Game, starring Joseph Chang as a detective with Asperger’s Syndrome, which starts filming next year.
Chang Jung-chi and Henri Chang direct. Copycat Killer Features a Taiwanese ensemble cast that includes Wu Kang-ren and Alice Ko as well as Tuo Tsunghua, Ruby Lin, and Tuo Tuo Tsunghua. It will be available on Netflix starting in the first quarter 2023.
