Netflix is streaming a new Spanish series about a demon-cult.

It was a pleasant surprise. Squid GameIt was viewed by so many people on Netflix last year. Although it was not the first international success of the streaming service, English-language content is more popular than ever. Netflix is expanding globally and content from other nations has been able to make it into the top 10. In fact, right now, a fifth of the top 10 shows and movies on Netflix weren’t made in America. One of them is the South Korean zombie-dramedy All of Us Are Deaf. The second Spanish thriller, previously unknown, is taking Netflix by storm. Feria: The Darkest of Light.

FeriaNetflix is streaming it now

We told you last week about a Danish sci fi show called “The Danish Sci-Fi Show”. ChosenThat had suddenly shot up to the top 10. This week FeriaIt has done the exact same. It sounds darker than it actually is ChosenIt follows the story of sisters Eva and Sofia, who apparently joined a death cult.

There are many things that go wrong. There’s a supernatural element as well, and the mysteries unravel over the course of the show’s 8-episode first season. Feria was co-created by Carlos Montero and Agustín Martínez. Montero also wrote the Spanish dramaElíte, which is one of Netflix’s most-watched shows of all time.

Here’s the official synopsis for Feria – The Darkest Light You can also watch the trailer on Netflix

Eva and Sofia will face the horrendous crime that their parents may have committed. The crime, which left 23 victims before it disappeared, is what Eva and Sofia must confront. Eva and Sofia will embark on this journey in Feria, a tiny village in the Andalusian Mountains in the mid-nineties. It is a dangerous place where people aren’t as stupid as they seem. The reality is a fantasy world.

The possibility of more seasons is possible

VarietyHad a chance to Talk to the creators Feria last month. They note that there isn’t much precedent when it comes to fantasy and sci-fi on Spanish TV. Montero believes Netflix has allowed creators to explore new ideas that may not have been possible before.

That’s just it. The ambition was always there, but we didn’t have the resources with open-air TV that was focused on making broader series that everyone would watch. It was nearly impossible to create a pure genre series. And now we’re at a point where pure genre projects don’t really exist , so we are working to adapt and blend genres which is something that Agustín and I love to do. It’s also key that we had the support of Netflix and the access to a budget and technology that let us make this series look as good as anything coming from Hollywood.

When you start a new Netflix series, one of your main concerns is not getting involved in the story before learning about its cancellation. The good news? The show is off to a strong start thanks to its solid pedigree. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee its continuation, but it’s a promising launch. The creators also stated that they would like to continue the series for two seasons, if given the chance.
