In reality, there are only five. This optical illusion is responsible.

It is even more astonishing that each column of the eyes has the exact same colour.

The illusion is a well-known eye trick, called the Munker-White illusion.

They are surrounded by tightly coloured lines, which deceive you.

Zooming in on the image can cause the illusion to fade a little and you will be able see the true color more clearly.

Lenstore, the creator of the image, claims that Michael White, a psychiatrist, invented the idea in the 1960s.

It is the perceived lightness of a particular shape.

If placed next to black or white objects, however, the same grey rectangles can appear to have lighter or more grey shades.

Hans Munker, another psychologist, observed that the same effect was seen with colored objects in the 1970s.

“Munker-White’s illusion works by placing a solid-coloured object behind bars of different colours, which influences the way we see them,” explained Sujata Paul from Lenstore.

“It depends on changing the stripes of the foreground. It still works regardless of what the background color is.

“This distorted perception of colour is caused a phenomenon that is based upon the Bezold Effect, named after Professor Wilhelm von Bezold. He discovered that colours may appear differently depending on their relation to each other.

“While some scientists believe that the illusion sets in during the early stages of visual processing, when the light first hits the retina, others think the effects happens later in the brain as it processes the data.”
