Taylor Swift‘s Midnights album is finally here, but it has fans wondering what the meaning is behind the bonus track The Great War.

On Friday, October 21, the 11-times Grammy Award winner dropped her tenth studio album, featuring 13 tracks. However, she then went on to drop the 3am Edition which she announced at, you guessed it, 3am as a “chaotic” surprise to fans.

The 3am Edition features seven extra songs, kicking off with the bonus track The Great War – but what does it all mean?

Taylor Swift’The Great War, 3am Edition bonus track seems to tap into the tension in a relationship as much as a couple fighting.

This relationship can be compared to World War I, and all the heartbreak and loss that it brought.

During the song, the 32-year-old gives the impression that the conflict in the relationship makes it feel like there’s no hope for the relationship to continue as She sings: “All that bloodshed, crimson clover/ Uh-huh, sweet dream was over.”

Then, she seems to speak about being haunted from past relationships and how she placed her insecurities onto her lover. “And maybe it’s the past that’s talking / Screaming from a crypt / Telling me to punish you for things you never did / So I justified it,”She sings.

Swift compares Swift’s lover to a bridge. This is when tension and conflict in the relationship seem to be at their most intense. ‘broken and blue’Soldier and realizes that her insecurity has really taken its toll on her partner. So she calls her ‘troops’he believes the war is over between them.

However, she leaves listeners with a glimmer of hope at the end of The Great War saying she hopes she and her partner can make it through the tension as she sings: “I vowed I would always be yours / ‘Cause we survived the Great War.”
