Matthew Perry “Grateful to Be Alive”After Addiction Battle

In his upcoming memoir—Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing—theFriendsThe 53-year-old alum will share his personal struggle with addiction and the near-death experience of a few years back. Perry had surgery for a gastrointestinal problem in Los Angeles in 2018. Fans knew of Perry’s procedure at the time but didn’t know how close they were to his death.

According to his New PeopleCover storyPerry suffered a colon burst due to opioid overuse. He spent two weeks in a Coma, and then five months in hospital.

The actor spoke to the magazine when he was first admitted to the hospital. “The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live. I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that’s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.”
