Martha Stewart Living Chairman, Hit-Making Records Executive Was 82

Charles Koppelman, whose publishing and talent development vision made him one of the recording industry’s top executives, has died at 82.

Koppelman recognized the potential for music publishing very early on in his career.

His career began as a singer-songwriter. He was part of Aldon Music’s legendary staff, which included Barry Mann, Neil Sedaka and Cynthia Weil.

In the 1970s, he moved to CBS Records and rose to the position of VP/GM for worldwide publishing. He saw the potential of owning songwriter rights and formed his own company with CBS executive Martin Bandier and Bandier’s father in law, NY real estate king Samuel LeFrak. The company was able to manage song catalogues for Dolly Parton and Cher among other artists.

Koppelman, Bandier, Stephen C. Swid created SBK Entertainment World, Inc. to acquire the 250,000 songs owned by CBS Songs. It was worth $125 Million, which is the largest price ever paid in music publishing.

SBK became the most important independent music publisher around the globe thanks to this deal. The roster included Michael Bolton and New Kids on the Block.

In 1989, they sold SBK Records to EMI Music for $300 Million. The deal led to the founding of SBK Records. Koppelman was its Chairman and CEO. The label was an instant hit, with Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam” Its first platinum-selling album, following by albums major from Wilson Phillips & Vanilla Ice.

Koppelman and Bandier both sold shares in SBK Records to EMI Music. Koppelman, however, became chairman and CEO at the newly consolidated EMI Records Group North America. Koppelman held the position of CEO from 1996 to 1997.

Koppelman served as Chairman from 2000 through 2004Steve MaddenMadden, who was serving time in prison for securities fraud, led the company, while he was leading it. Following his release, he was appointed chairman of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. In 2011, he joined various boards in the entertainment sector.

It has not yet been revealed what memorial plans will be made.
