Many Major Category Nominees Are Viral on Apple

On Tuesday, the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2022 Grammys, and most of the songs that were nominated in major categories — and a smattering of those nominated in smaller categories — inspired trends or went viral on TikTok in some way.

TikTok is an app that has been embraced by so many celebrities in the major categories.

Seven of the nine Song of the Year nominees and seven of the 10 Record of the Year nominees were hits on TikTok. These nominees featured tracks by Lil Nas X. “Montero (Call me By Your Name)” (TikTok has 2.2 million videos), “Drivers License”Olivia Rodrigo (1.4 Million videosSilk Sonic’s “Leave The Door Open” (101,500 videos).

Some of the nominees set trends, but others were more popular on the app. Doja Cat, SZA “Kiss Me More,”Doja Cat’s best song “Planet Her”This song, which was also nominated, was TikTok’s biggest hit of 2021. The song was Used in more than 2.5 million videosIt spawned many trends, including one in which TikTokers did a limp wrist gesture to indicate their queer status.

This isn’t a sudden shift — since TikTok merged with Musical.ly and launched in the United States in 2018, it’s become an essential promotional tool for artists and labels, Insider reported previously. The app’s power became clear in 2019, when it helped catapult songs like Lil Nas X “Old Town Road”Or Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”Up the Billboard Charts. Many of the songs that were nominated for major categories at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, which took places in March, were TikTok-famous.
