Mani Ratnam’s Tamil-language epic “Ponniyin Selvan: 1”Co-producers Madras Talkies have released numbers that show that the movie had a worldwide opening weekend in excess of INR2 billion (or $24.5 million).
The film broke some records in Tamil-language cinema. The film’s release date was Sept. 30, and it grossed $9.8million that day. It is the highest ever opening day for Tamil-language films.
The film was the sixth most successful Tamil-language film to open in the United States, with $4.01million. It also had an average per-screen of $8.036, which was the highest among the top 10 films.
It was the most successful Indian film to open in Malaysia this year, earning MYR8.4million ($1.8 million)
“Ponniyin Selvan: 1”The IMAX format also saw strong openings across the U.S. and U.K. India as well as Singapore.
Written by Kalki Krishnamurthy (deceased). “Ponniyin Selvan,”This classic Tamil novel was published in Kalki magazine in 1950-54 and later in five novels in 1955. It takes place in the 10th Century in southern India and Sri Lanka. This is during turbulent times for the Chola empire. The power struggle between the different branches caused violent rifts and the possibility of civil war.
Ratnam and his team condensed the story into two short films. The first part ends with a cliffhanger. The second part, which has been completed, will be released in 2023.
