Leader Debate Cancelled Following Frontrunners Rishi Panak and Liz Truss’ Drop

The third Conservative TV debate was cancelled after Liz Truss (the frontrunner) and Rishi Sunak (the backrunners) pulled out.

Sky’s debate was due to take place tonight, after ITV and Channel 4 hosted similar debates in the past few days with the final five candidates to replace Boris Johnson.

Sky has made an update in recent minutes to state that it cannot continue the debate without Sunak, former Chancellor, or Truss, Foreign Secretary.

Sky News stated that it would update its information soon.

These two are considered to be the frontrunners. Sunak currently leads in terms of MPs. This week will see only two candidates remaining to run for the leadership, and then become Prime Minister. The new person will take office in September.

Penny Mordaunt, one of Sunak and Truss’s main rivals, told The Guardian: “It’s shame some colleagues cannot find a way to debate one another in a civil way. Throughout this contest, [Penny] has never dodged media or shied away from broadcast interviews and debates – people deserve to hear from their leaders.”
