For nearly the entirety of the century so far, Jimmy Kimmel has been the face of ABC’s late night schedule, where his talk show Jimmy Kimmel LiveIt has remained constant Competitor against friendly competition like Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, Stephen Colbert’s Late Show and James Corden’s Late Late Show. However, in the last year, the host has spoken as if He was tiptoeing toward retirementAlthough he didn’t say much, he said that he was. Kimmel signed a three year contract extension that would keep him in place for at least 2025. His explanation for the reversal of course is one many could relate to.
Kimmel stopped by one of his most popular conversation spots. Howard Stern Show, to talk about awards shows — including His controversial Emmys moment that marred Quinta Brunson’s historic Abbott Elementary win — and watching football with Tom Cruise. Celebrities are very similar to us normies. Naturally, the conversation turned to his late night future, and Howard Stern brought up past moments where the subject of quitting came up, saying he didn’t think Kimmel would walk away from it, in the sense that no job afterward would be nearly as rewarding. The late night host was open to the idea and stated:
Being wanted is an important aspect of life. ABC wanted me to stay. But I didn’t know. I thought, “Maybe they want to start all over.” The network administrators might want to find their own person and leave their mark and have someone for the next 20 or so years.
Those thoughts may sound ridiculous to some, but it’s not like network executives are the warmest and easiest-to-read people in the world, and it’s easy to imagine they don’t spend ample amounts of time formally expressing their desires to keep each and every employee working within the company. And to that end, sometimes it’s hard for a person to know their value within a company without someone stating it plainly. But it was just… It was just… This is not just about leaving. What you have to go through, and the emotional toll it takes. It was like, “Okay you’ve got six months. Now you’ve got to wrap it all up.” It was much easier for me to say, “You know what?” That will be my concern in three years.
Granted, not everyone would have as many things to work out as a late night talk show host, but it’s still a relatable enough idea. I can assure you, “I want to paint my living room this weekend,” but after thinking about having to take down all my pictures and art and shelving, along with the process of covering floors and furniture, I’d rather just take a nap.
What’s more, even after nearly two decades of being a talk show mainstay, Jimmy Kimmel hasn’t forgotten the burdens and struggles during his years before landing The Man ShowAnd eventually Joe Rogan is the next in line.. He went on, explaining his early years of radio in-flux:
When you’re in radio, like us, it’s hard to get fired. You’re barely scraping by and trying to make things happen. I lost most of my radio jobs, and most didn’t last more than a year. . . . It’s hard to imagine quitting my job.
Kimmel could tell his twentysomething self a number of stories that would blow his mind. Even though it could lead to something paradoxical and potentially threatening all of time and space, Jimmy, keep hosting the show. Maybe the universe won’t collapse.
