Jane Moore: I’ve always struggled to dress smartly or casually. Then, I discovered the velvet suit.

THE dress code “smart casual”I am always confused.

But if there’s an outfit that encapsulates the description perfectly then it has to be a velvet-look suit.

This one, in deep red with ruched sleeves, could be dressed up for a winter wedding with a silk shirt underneath, or dressed down – as shown here – with a plain polo neck sweater or even a smart, long-sleeved T-shirt.

Either way, velvet looks classy and gives the impression of making an effort, but also keeps you warm and comfortable if the venue’s a bit chilly.

How many times have you been in a slinky frock to go to work and then had to put your coat on because the heat was not on?

The suit is looser than a tailored style, and the pants are good length for taller people, such as me.

I have teamed it with a pair of sparkly court shoes – very “in” at the moment – for that extra smart look.

Comfortable, classy and warm. I like it.

You’ve been putting on your foundation all wrong – the right way will avoid making it look cakey
