Directed by John William Ross, the movie was released on Hulu and Disney+ on Monday, October 10th 2022, with trailers and conversation surrounding it compelling some to ask the question… is Grimcutty based on Momo?

Is Grimcutty based upon the Momo challenge or is it a different Grimcutty?

Yes, the Momo Challenge is the inspiration behind Grimcutty.

The film tells the tale of a suburban teenage girl named Asha (played by Sara Wolfkind) who, along with her younger brother, is confronted by a mysterious internet meme that has been brought to life as a result of her parents’ hysteria surrounding the online trend.

The following is a brief explanation of what the term was. “Momo Challenge”It was an urban legend circulated online. Many people posted it to suggest that sharing it encouraged people commit violent and horrendous acts of violence under the guidance of Momo.

Rolling StoneIt was reported that the hoax was widely believed to be a hoax in 2019, after it had become a popular phenomenon in the previous year. The Police Service of Northern Island (PSNI), even posted a warning.

‘The parents were so freaked out’

The film’s director recently spoke with Laughing Placehe was asked to explain the inspiration behind this project.

“I think it’s pretty obvious [that] it’s not-so-loosely based on the ‘Momo Challenge.’ I was looking for an idea and I saw this local newscast about the Momo Challenge, and it was very typical local-news scaremongering. But I think what struck me about it was the disconnect between what parents thought it was and what kids thought it was.”

He stated that “it almost felt like some kind of weird comedy sketch or something. The parents were so freaked out about this thing, but then they’d always go and interview kids about it, and they were like, ‘The what now?’ They didn’t even know what they were talking about.”

He argued that, taking all this into consideration, “it just felt ripe for satire”The opportunity for him “to do Invasion of the Body Snatchers with technology”In essence, it posed itself.
