Is Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther 2 as T’Challa?

The MCU has treated audiences to a healthy range of iconic performances since Robert Downey Jr. donned the red and gold suit in Jon Favreau’s 2008 blockbuster Iron Man. Of course, Robert’s is one of those iconic performances, as well as Chris Evans as Captain American and Chris Hemsworth as Thor. On the other hand, one of the franchise’s most iconic came much later in the game.

Of course, that’s Chadwick Boseman’s take on T’Challa from Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther.

Now, fast forward to the present, and audiences will finally be invited to see Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 2, which reunites Ryan as director with familiar faces.

WARNING! SPOILERS FOR WAKANDA FOREVER OPENING

Chadwick Boseman is in Black Panther 2

No, Chadwick Boseman doesn’t reprise the role of T’Challa in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever but the king’s off-screen presence and later absence is central to the story.

The opening of the film addresses that T’Challa is dying of an illness, of which the details are not explicitly acknowledged. Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, vows to cure her brother and save Wakanda’s leader.

She is unable to do so and learns that her father has died. His death is not shown on-screen. She bursts into tears and then the film is interrupted by the addition of Marvel’s opening logo, as expected but this time with a twist. The logo sequence is dedicated entirely to commemorating Chadwick and T’Challa, rather than showcasing a range of Marvel heroes.

After the story is retold, Shuri (Angela Bassett) and the Wakanda people are reunited as they deal with the sudden loss their most loved figure.

‘It’s better if I read it later’

Ryan discussed Ryan’s movie recently Marvel’s The Official Black Panther PodcastIt was revealed that Chadwick did not get to read the first draft Wakanda Forever.

“I had just finished it. My last conversation with him was calling him and asking if he wanted to read it before I got notes from the studio. That was the last time we spoke, and he passed maybe a couple of weeks after I finished.”

He explained: “… he said he didn’t want to read it, because he didn’t want to get in the way of whatever notes the studio might have, so he was like, ‘It’s better if I read it later.’ But I found out later that he was too tired to read anything.”

The Independent reports that both Ryan and co-screenwriter Joe Robert Cole were tasked with revising the script in the wake of Chadwick’s passing.

Chadwick was buried in August 2020. ColliderAccording to reports, production of Wakanda Forever began June 2021.
