Are you ever annoyed by the number of Netflix movies and shows that are being released? That’s probably because it does. MoffettNathanson’s Wall Street research firm recently released a report (via VarietyNetflix launched 1,026 original TV episodes in the third quarter of 2022. This broke its own record.
No other streaming service comes close. Amazon’s Prime Video, the second most prolific streamer, released 223 episodes of TV over the same three-month period. Hulu published 194 episodes, Disney Plus 140, and HBO Max only 114.

These totals do not include original content. Shows that are licensed include In The Dark, Dynasty?, Intervention don’t count. Netflix has released 159 original series between July 1 and September 30 of this year. That’s 16 more originals than the streamer’s previous record of 143, which came in Q4 of 2021. Netflix is flooding the area like never before.
There are many reasons why Netflix has seen an explosion in its output. One possibility is that many shows had delays because of the pandemic. They would have arrived earlier. Netflix lost more than 1 million subscribers in Q2, which is actually less than expected. It is possible that the content flood was an attempt to keep subscribers away.

Streaming’s penetration of American households has hit maturity, as has nearly every individual service except for the newest entrants of Peacock and Paramount+. Streaming services no longer compete to attract new customers to streaming but to retain existing customers.
