A PILOT has explained why they DON’T just rely on autopilot – especially in dangerous situations.
It’s a common misconception that airline pilots don’t do anything in the cockpit other than manage take off and landing.

In a video posted to TikTok, one man questioned what pilots do on long flights.
“What do they do for 18 hour flights, like Singapore to New York, all they need to do is take off and land,” he said.
Gary Baumgardener, a pilot who uses the social media platform to explain the job and answer questions around flying, responded with his own clip.
He replied on his account, @Garybpilot, and explained: “I just want to set the record straight and clear up a couple of misconceptions.
“First off, when you say ‘you do nothing other than take off and landing’ that’s not accurate.
“Everyone thinks we’re like Homer Simpson up there, like there’s just one big button up there that we push called autopilot and then do nothing.
“Just remember the autopilot is a tool, just the same way as a bat is a tool for a major league baseball player when he wants to hit a home run.
“If you’re flying and a thunderstorm shows up, the autopilot cannot automatically direct you out that.
“If Air Traffic Control tells you to climb, or descend or turn, that just doesn’t happen with autopilot, we have to do that.”
Gary also explained the flight crew have to monitor logs, take ATC calls and system checks as well as many other responsibilities.
The pilot added that on longer flights, they are allowed to sleep in bunks on the plane.
On an 18 hour flight, the pilots would also eat breakfast, lunch and dinner just as the passengers do.
