I’m a fashion expert and these Noughties trends are making an appearance – but it can make you look so tacky

BALLET pumps and velour tracksuits were just a few examples of items that made a comeback in the 1990s and 2000s.

They are welcome back to 2022, but shoppers see them back in high-street stores.

Exclusively speaking to Fabulous, Karine Laudort, fashion guru and fashion expert, revealed which iconic trends she is thrilled to see returning – as well as the ones to avoid.

Velour tracksuits

Velour tracksuits are a hot trend for the past year and whether you love them or not, they will only continue to grow in popularity.

However, while Britney, J Lo, and Paris Hilton made this trend mainstream in late 1990’s and early 2000, does it remain?

“That can easily be debatable,” explains Karine. It can be difficult to style velvet tracksuits and they can look tacky.

“Less is more, so if one is to wear a velour tracksuit, it would be best to not over-accessorise.”

She recommends: “Wear a plain tee and nice sneakers or half of the suit (either the zip jacket or the bottom only and pair them if a different piece of clothing). This will immediately smarten the look.”

Mini skirts

This year’s defining trend was mini skirts, and even micro skirts.

But according to Karine, although deemed risqué by most, mini and micro skirts when worn with long sleeves items or blazers can help to “emphasise your legs, whether paired with heels or flat shoes.”

She also adds: “When pleated, they come across as playful and even sexier.”

Fashion guru says that although they are not practical for everyday use, they can be a statement piece.

“Old ages should feel comfortable rocking them if they’re confident enough,”She elaborates.

Karine offers a style tip: “Wearing a top which is the same colour as the skirt will make the look sleeker. Whether worn for a date night, night out, or brunch, mini skirts are here to stay.”

Ballet pumps

They’ve sent shoppers into a frenzy after popping up in high-street stores including Primark and M&S, but fashion fans have been left divided by the return of the ballet pump.

Karine, fashion guru and all-around savant, is not happy either.

“One of the main reasons ballet slippers are trending in 2022 is because the Cottagecore aesthetic is also proving to be more prevalent,”She elaborates.

“Cottagecore is a nod to the traditional English countryside style, both picturesque, nostalgic and very kitsch.”

She continues: “I personally find ballet pumps although comfortable, not always flattering.”

Karine claims that the “clean girl” aesthetic is also in fashion recently. This may be due to ballet pumps returning to the fashion scene.

Cargo trousers

Cargo trousers have been rediscovered by Hailey Bieber (Emily Ratajkowski), Kim Kardashian (Kim Kardashian) and Hailey Bieber (Hailey Bieber).

Karine warns however that they must be properly styled to look good.

“Cargo trousers can be very comfortable and flattering if worn fitted,”She says. “Their classic baggy fit gives a cinched look to the waist and is easily styled with either heels or flats, depending on the occasion.”

According to the fashion stylist, one of the reasons they are so popular is because of the revival of casual wear and loungewear during that period – as well as their ability to be worn in public. “comfortability and practicality.”

She also adds: “And when you with cardio pants that have multiple pockets, you can choose to leave your bag/purse at home.”

Trends to be on the lookout for

Karine lists slip dresses as the first trend to watch for – whether they are silk, satin, or sheer.

“Forever a classy and timeless look,”She says.

Next is double-denim. This could be a denim jacket worn with denim jeans, or skirts.

“Denim will never go out of fashion,”Fashion whizzes take note. “Denim can be dressed up or down depending on the cut of the garment (jeans, skirt or jacket).”

Karine finally praises the boho-skirt.

“I live for a boho skirt but they are better suited for taller people or people with longer legs,”She warns. “Avoid too many frills on the skirt which could cheapen your overall look.”

Trends to Avoid

According to the fashion guru, she doesn’t like the claw clip or hair clip trend but she does expect it to return in 2019.

“It’s been coming back in a big way and designer brands such as Prada, Celine, Dior & Givenchy are offering premium hair accessories which most of the time resemble almost like hair jewellery,”She says.

“While I love accessories, and can appreciate hair ornaments which always add a touch of elegant to a look, I personally do not care for them.”

Karine gives her opinion on short cycling pants.

“I’m split between the fact they can be edgy if and when worn as daywear and if paired with a structured jacket/blazer, along with the right footwear and accessories (such as eye-wear),”She says.

“But on the other end, they can very easily be deemed as ‘tacky’ as some may consider them to be underwear or athleisure rather than day wear.”

Karine ends her remarks by sharing a trend she believes will never return.

She says: “The JNCO jeans are (JudgeNOneChooseOne) with their ultra-wide legs and prominent pocket logos were the hottest thing in the 90’s (with prices averaging between £200-£300), but I feel they should remain there.

“They were an exaggeration in the baggy jeans trend. They took the wide legs to extreme.

“Not all trends are made to come back and this is a perfect example.”
