I’m a chef and you’ve been storing cheese all wrong – this hack stops it going mouldy & makes it last four times longer

CHEESE is a delicious fridge staple that many of us Brits will often buy on our weekly food shop.

But if you store cheese incorrectly or leave it in your fridge for too long, it can quickly go mouldy.

But thanks to one chef, there’s a simple hack to prevent cheese from going mouldy, making it last up to four times longer.

According to Kathleen Ashmore, it turns out that we’ve been storing our cheese all wrong.

And yes, if you use it and then put it straight back in the fridge, in the plastic wrapper it came in, we’re talking to you.

Kat, known as ‘katcancook’ took to TikTok to share her cheese storage hack.

She dubbed the video “cheese storage 101” and showed exactly how people could prolong the lifespan of their cheese.

So long as you avoid the common cheese storage mistake, according to Kat, your cheese won’t go mouldy as quick and will therefore save you money regularly buying more.

The professionally trained private chef, blogger and mum of two, Kat, describes herself as “that mum friend you ask for healthy recipes”.

She has 2million followers and 16.1million likes on TikTok.

And in her cheese video, Kat urged Brits to stop keeping their cheese in the wrapper it comes in.

The food expert said: “I beg of you, please stop keeping your cheese in the plastic from the grocery store.

“It’s going to get mouldy and you’re wasting your money.

“Once you cut into it the first time, take it out of the plastic.”

Instead of keeping the cheese in the wrapper it comes in, Kat urges people to use a certain kind of wrapping, what she describes as “cheese paper”.

Kay said: “This is the cheese paper that is used, but if you can’t get your hands on some you can even just use a wax bag or a piece of parchment paper or put it in a paper bag.

“Cheese paper is really just wax paper on one side and parchment on the other.”

The foodie explained exactly why this is so important and necessary if you want your cheese to last a long time.

She continued: “The big thing is that you want it to be able to breathe because cheese tends to have a high moisture content.

“If it can’t breathe then the moisture gets trapped and that’s a breeding ground for bacteria and mould.

“So, just wrap it up like a nice little gift and you will find it lasts three to four times longer in the fridge than if you left it in plastic.”

Kat’s video has clearly impressed many as it has racked up 1.6million views.

It has 119.9k likes, 1,466 comments and 9,733 shares.

Many foodies were very impressed with Kat’s clever hack and took to the comments to express this.

One person said: “Cool! Thank you! We love charcuterie cheese boards in summer and we hate when we feel we have wasted a good cheese!”

Another added: “I had no idea!!!!!”

A third commented: “Great tip.”

Another said: “Omg I never knew about cheese paper. Thank u!!”

However, lots of people were shocked that people leave cheese long enough in their fridge to get mouldy, with many making a joke of the hack.

One TikTok user commented: “Cheese never has the chance to get mouldy at my house.”

Another stated: “That tiny thing of cheese ain’t lasting long enough to go bad.”

Someone else claimed: “Bold of you to assume I won’t eat it all in one sitting.”

If your cheese has started to go mouldy, in some cases, you can still eat cheese it.

Hard cheese can be eaten even if they have begun to go mouldy – all you need to do is cut the mould off and enjoy the rest of the cheese.

However, soft cheese, grated cheese and sliced cheese should all be thrown away if they have started to go mouldy.
