Movie goers were fizzing at the prospect of I Am Legend 2’s release date being in 2023. The virality of a poster that claimed the movie was coming soon has fueled excitement for the sequel.
Will Smith‘s I Am Legend was a critical and commercial success when it arrived in cinemas all the way back in 2007. The post-apocalyptic action thriller is based on the classic novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, and sees US Army virologist Robert Neville (Smith) surviving as the last human in New York after a deadly virus has wiped out most of mankind.
The sequel is already greenlit
Since the release of the movie, Warner Bros. has been looking to develop a sequel/prequel or even a reboot. Smith played a major role in the initial success and, given the fact that his character (spoiler) died at the conclusion of the film, it was difficult to plot out a new movie.
However, in 2022, an I Am Legend sequel was officially greenlit by the studio, who confirmed they were bringing Smith back, while adding Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan.
They will both produce it along with the original screenwriter Akiva goldsman. Francis Lawrence, director of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (original film), helmed it.

We know a lot about I Am Legend 2.
We already know some things about the I Am Legend 2 sequel. Firstly, it was confirmed that the sequel would not follow the original theatrical ending (how could it, when Smith’s character is dead?).
This will be a continuation from the alternative ending to the movie that is more in line with the original novel. In this alternate ending, Will Smith’s Robert Neville leaves the city with other survivors after realising his mistakes experimenting on the mutants.
I Am Legend 2 will therefore somehow have to explain to audiences why it’s essentially ignoring the end of the version most people have watched, although it remains to be seen how.
Sadly, though, I Am Legend 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, and it certainly won’t be in 2023. Given that the script hasn’t even been written yet, and pre-production is still a way off, it seems unlikely I Am Legend 2 will arrive any time before 2026.
