A DAD-of-two who constructed a world-first Grand Designs home witnessed his roof dramatically collapsing when a builder overlooked a crucial rule. Richard Hawkes, 49, and his wife Sophie, 50, reside near Maidstone, Kent in a dwelling described as “lunacy” by Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud.

Their “gravity defying” home showcases a stunning arch unsupported and made of merely a 100mm-thick layer of tiles and Plaster of Paris. The design, a world-first, featuring a method typically reserved for dome structures, with builders instructed to avoid exerting pressure on the structure during the build.
In a nail-biting incident during filming, the structure unexpectedly caved behind Kevin, costing them an extra week of labor and £200,000. Richard recounted the moment, saying, “There was a time when Kevin was on site filming with the house in the background when the roof collapsed.”

With the collapsed section repaired, the contractors were reminded of the critical rule of not leaning on the initial layer of tiles. Although some workers were initially frustrated, the team rallied together, acknowledging the fortunate outcome.
