Codeshare flights refers to when two airlines reach an agreement to each sell tickets for their respective flights.

For example, British Airways codeshares with a number of international airlines including American Airlines, Qantas and Aer Lingus.

And Virgin Atlantic codeshares with Air France, Delta and KLM.

This can be a great option, as you can book whole flights with one airline even though they may not fly to your destination with their plane.

But, it could also lead to problems.

Recently, a boy was stopped from boarding his plane after realizing that he had been on a codeshare flight.

Charlie Read, 12, was travelling with Qantas from Auckland to see his dad in Thailand, the first time he was seeing him in nine months.

Because he was flying solo, he required flight support.

The second connection flight was with Emirates. Since he had not booked any extra support with Qantas – he was therefore prohibited from boarding.

You may also have problems with your luggage allowance due to the fact that every airline has its own rules.

You may not get the same experience even if your seat is in business or premium economy.

You can check to see if your flight has codeshare status. Most airlines will indicate this when you book.

If you book a Virgin flight, but half the route was with Delta it is possible to get a Delta discount. “Operated by Delta”.

You can also find lots of information about the flight on your boarding card.

Airline codes can be simple: QF is Qantas; Virgin Atlantic is VS; AA is American Airlines; BA is British Airways; NZ is Air New Zealand.

There are other codes on your boarding pass too, including SSSS which is always bad news.

This code applies only if you are traveling to the US. “Secondary Security Screening Selection.”
