Here’s why I am a psychologist and passengers on planes are so irritating to me

A PSYCHOLOGIST reveals why some people can’t help but be annoying on planes – even though they know how irritating it is to others.

There’s plenty of things people do on planes that wind up others, with bare feet, reclined seats and open window blinds all among the biggest bugbears.

Some people stand up early because planes make them feel nervous

However, there’s another bad habit even higher up on the list – passengers standing in the aisle before the plane has come to a stop and the doors have opened.

Many people hate it, and frequent flyers are not fans.Stephanie MillerThe act was recently described by, as the “absolute worst”.

The subject came up when she was discussing plane etiquette on podcast Kicpod, which she hosts with fellow model Laura Henshaw.

She said: “There is one thing that people do on the aeroplane that is the absolute worst.

“And the first thing everyone does is stand up.

“I’m sorry but if you stand up and you realise everyone else is just standing there and the lines are going nowhere for 15 minutes, sit back down.”

But, it is possible that people are motivated by more than a desire to be the first one off the plane.

Gaynor Parkin is a registered psychologist and CEO at Umbrella Wellbeing.

A recent article by Stuff.co.nzShe shared the reasons why people feel the need not to be down as soon the plane touches down, even though they know that it is unlikely to get them out of there any sooner.

She explained that the desire to do something actively often leads people to get up earlier than usual and that waiting can feel like a waste.

She stated: “You always want to go on to the next thing… you want to get off and get on with the day.”

There are passengers who find a plane cabin stressful. This can lead to panic attacks.

Gaynor stated that these people are standing up because they feel they must get off the plane faster.

She continued: “Working as a psychologist for the last 30 years, I know plane phobias and people having panic attacks when they’re in crowded places is really common.”

A third group of people feel the need to be there as soon as they land. These are the people most people dislike: the entitled people.

Gaynor stated, “Sometimes passengers believe they should be let out of the plane first” and thus act accordingly.

She stated: “They think, ‘I’m special, I should get to get off first’.”

In the meantime, a pilot showed us how to always get off first.
