Here’s a closer look at the two Netflix reality series that premiered this week

Netflix has added another competition series, Friday October 28, to its growing number of reality shows. This includes everything from dating-related titles (like Love is blindThe #1 US show is, incidentally, the 5 season. Real estate-based series such as the 5-season are also available. Sunsets on Sale. The latest is Drink Masters, part of a pair of new reality titles that the streaming giant dropped this week, rounding out a content category that tends to get a bit overshadowed by things like the company’s prestige dramas and Oscar-nominated original movies.

Netflix has two new reality series

The 10-episode Drink MastersThe reality show features players competing for a single goal. “Meet a bunch of attractive and rich people — don’t you just envy their life?” variety. More on the second one shortly.

Drink Masters

The newest is first. Netflix already has a slew of variations on reality cooking shows that are competition-based, such as The Great British Baking Show, The American Barbecue ShowdownAnd School of Chocolate. Drink MastersMixologists from 12 different countries are brought together to create a unique mixology. “infuse, stir and blend their way through a series of high-stakes cocktail challenges to win a life-changing prize and the title of The Ultimate Drink Master.”

The show is visually stunning, with the action taking place in a bar and rows upon rows of brightly colored spirits reaching to the ceiling. The conceit here is simple: Contestants are told they’ll be required to push their skills to the limit “to create masterpieces of liquid art.”Bottoms up


Dubai Bling

A second reality show that Netflix launched this week is “The Real Housewives of New York.” Dubai Bling.

The cast here includes participants from the UAE, as well as Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, and Iraq — along with ex-pats from India and Australia, who now live in Dubai.

As I wrote yesterday in a piece summarizing the series, it’s essentially the transplanting of a Kardashian-style, Bling EmpireThis is how Dubai feels. The well-off residents of Dubai’s global financial center are as familiar with wealth and status as they are the air they inhale. A skyscraper-filled, blinged-out megacity, Dubai attracts the bold and the billionaires alike — and now, the city is also the setting for Netflix’s newest reality title about wealth and status-chasing.

“Meet the local residents for whom bling is the everyday, and who can fall out over carats as much as diamonds,”Netflix comments on the new series. “When 1 in 100 residents is a millionaire, they all want to reach the highest level of the ladder.”
