Here’s a brief history of MPs who try to appear like they love football.

Politicians are like us – they have normal interests and are just like us.

They think that’s what voters will think. So they constantly fall over themselves to get papped going to the pub or… Football.

Football. There is no better way to demonstrate that you are a person who cares about people than to go to your local and get a pint of something to cheer every goal scored by England. There are better ways, perhaps because politicians who try to make it seem like they love it have just looked odd.

Here are some times that politicians watched the game. They looked quite strange doing so.

Boris Johnson wave a flag

Johnson, then Prime Minister of England, showed everyone how committed he was to all things footie last summer by standing in the street outside Downing Street waving and decorating the exterior gaff with all things England during the Euros.

It did not appear as authentic as he might have hoped.

He wore a shirt from England with his name on it over his shirt and tie, as if that wasn’t enough. It wasn’t the most comfortable look.

Keir starmer watches the World Cup from just inches away

The leader of the opposition is now in control. He might need to adjust his glasses prescription, having watched Wales draw with the US last evening almost. Press the button against the TV’s screen.He is known for his love of football, which is one of his most important personality traits. He still plays with friends and it is sad that he doesn’t know how to properly watch it.

Priti Patel believes that football is coming home

Patel, despite being one of those politicians who stirred up nonsense about kneeling before games during last years Euros, posted an image of Patel cheering in England’s win.

It was disingenuous for many.

Rishi Sunak completes a wallchart

Self-confessed Southamptonite, the new prime minister shared a video before the 2022 World Cup began in which he wished England & Wales all the best. But he decided to do it by filling out a wallchart just before the tournament started in a way that didn’t seem right.

David Cameron forgot which football team it was that he supported

David Cameron, former prime minister, had a long history with football. He often forgot which team he supported. In 2015, he gave a speech in which he stated that he supports West Ham United. He had previously stated on numerous occasions that he supports another team in claret-blue; Aston Villa. Speaking afterwardHe stated: “I had what Natalie Bennett described as a brain fade. I’m a Villa fan … I must have been overcome by something … this morning. But there we are, these things sometimes happen when you are on the stump.”

Politicians are like us – normal people with common interests…

It is an unwritten principle that the government gets its democratic legitimacy from the people. The country’s future cannot be decided by plotting at Westminster.
