Many families couldn’t spend Christmas together because of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s evident that many people will be doing everything to make this Christmas special.

While we all want to look great over the holidays, overindulgence could lead to dry skin, breakouts, and general loss of sparkle.

Helen Green, national aesthetic nurse at Transform Hospital GroupMany people feel like Santa Clauses during the holidays.

Helen discusses the conditions that can make you look festive and what you can do to eliminate them.

Feeling puffy

Helen suggests that if you feel puffy around your face, it might be due to the foods you eat.

She said: “Party food tends to contain lots of salt which can cause us to dehydrate and our body to hold onto water which can make use bloated and our faces look puffy, especially around the eyes.”

Helen suggested that you drink more water to reduce puffiness and that you get a good night’s sleep.

Acne

Breakouts are a bad idea. Family and friends will take selfies of themselves in festive attire.

Helen explained to us that too much sugar, cheese and fried fatty foods can cause skin to explode.

They can also stimulate insulin production, inhibit digestion and increase insulin levels.

“This means that we are unable to detoxify our bodies”She added.

Helen suggests that you increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, and water to combat acne and breakouts during the festive season.

Redecorating

Santa might have rosy cheeks because he was windswept on the sleigh. However, your red face may be due to boozing.

Helen stated that alcohol can dry our skin but it can also cause blood vessels to dilate, which can make us look flush.

“Instead switch to non-alcoholic drinks which won’t have the same effect.”

These are easier to find than they were in years past. Many bars now offer mocktails as well as alcohol-free gins.

Brewdog, Infinite Sessions and Becks offer low- or no-alcohol beers if you are brewing your own beer.

Dry skin

Dry, flakey skin can make you feel uncomfortable and less attractive.

Helen stated that dry, flakey skin can often be caused by dehydration. This is the main reason for excessive alcohol intake.

“Try to cut back on your intake, substitute every other drink for a glass of water and keep your skin thoroughly moisturised”She added.

Your sparkle is gone

You might feel a bit “meh” if you are feeling just a bit.

Helen said: “If a lack of sleep, alcohol and sugar has left your skin looking dull and tired then the best thing to do is get your fix of vitamins and minerals and as before, hydrate.”

She also suggested that you consider Hydrafacials, which can unblock your pores and leave your skin glowing.
