Sauron is a Maiar. Gandalf is similar to Sauron. He’s an angel in the Lord of The Rings universe. Gandalf is actually a servant of Manwe who is the favourite god of Eru Illuvatar (chief God in Tolkien’s Pantheon). However, Sauron is controlled by Morgoth (also called Melkor), who for all intents is the world’s devil. Morgoth, however, was defeated by Eru in the distant past.
