Stage Collapse Tragedy in Mexico

At least nine people have died and 50 are injured after a stage collapsed at an election rally in Mexico last night. Terrifying footage captured the moment strong winds brought down the scaffolding as crowds fled.

Structure Collapsed Onto Stage

The victims so far are eight adults and one child, Nuevo Leon state governor Samuel Garcia said. Video of the accident showed the structure suddenly falling forward into the crowd, sending the politicians on stage running for cover and panicked attendees scattering.

Emergency Response Efforts

Emergency services and soldiers were at the scene to provide support for the victims. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his condolences and sent support to the family members and friends of the victims and political supporters.

Presidential Candidate’s Response

Jorge Alvarez Maynez, the presidential candidate for the centrist Citizens’ Movement party, was injured in the incident along with members of his election team. He stated, “I’ve never experienced something so sudden,” and vowed to remain at the scene until the last injured person was taken to the hospital.

Potential Impact on Elections

The tragic incident occurred as Mexico prepares for upcoming elections on June 2. Mexicans will be voting for a new president, members of Congress, several state governors, and local officials. In total, more than 20,000 positions are being contested.
