Fascinating Archaeological Findings from the Bronze Age and Ancient Roman Periods, Discovered in Izmir

Turkey’s officials walked through Izmir streets and alleyways to reach a hole in ground. But it wasn’t just any hole in the ground.

They set up a ladder, climbed through an ancient Roman column and finally reached the room of a home more than 2700 years old.

The house was once home to a wealthy family during the early Roman period. Numerous architectural details have been slowly discovered on the site.

Reportedly, the digs have not been authorized, and police say they’ve detained three suspects who were trying to excavate the ancient habitation.

There are many interesting architectural discoveries in Izmir. These include an almost 2,000-year-old amphitheater as well as a communal latrine that was once believed to have been used by actors.

It was discovered that a settlement was built in 2000 BC, proving that the area was a major trading hub during the Bronze Age.

Also, recently found were 2,500-year old mourning masks that Ionian women used to use to represent their grief over the deaths of their warrior husbands.

The archaeological work in Izmir continues, and treasures from the distant past are still being discovered.
