Fans remember ‘legendary’ Art Laboe’s concert experiences as DJ dies at 97

Art Laboe, a legendary Armenian-American DJ, died at the age 97.

A spokesperson for the disco jockey’s production company revealed that he passed on Friday, October 7th after catching pneumonia, The Guardian reports.

Art is best known for his radio program Art Laboe Connectionboth in-person concerts. He is also remembered for helping end segregation throughout south California.

This was the legendary DJ. Live shows for drive-ins. His shows attracted people from all races, including White Americans, African-Americans, and Latinos. Many of the attendees danced to his rock and rolling tunes.

Art Laboe, who served in the Navy during World War II, was the first to host concerts.

The Guardian notes that legendary DJ Arthur Egnoian was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to an Armenian American couple in 1925.

Art was raised in a single-mother family during the Great Depression. As a child, he listened to radio.

He moved to California as a teenager and attended Stanford University. The musician served in World War II with the US Navy.

Art returned from war to pursue a career radio, landing the radio announcer position at KSAN in San Francisco.

He quickly became a well-known DJ and host. He was the only host to interview Elvis Presley, the King of Rock.

He was a radio host who made his mark in the music industry simultaneously hosting his inclusive concerts.

Art’s fans loved his concerts. His show was a memorable experience for many.

The DJ’s last concert took place a day after his death on Saturday, September 8th at the Glen Helen Amphitheater in San Bernardino.

Art Laboe Connection Show was a fan favorite

Besides his iconic concerts, the DJ was best known for hosting 93.5 KDAY’s Art Laboe Connection.

According to The Guardian the show was extremely popular in the Mexican-American community.

Listeners could call in with a request for a 1950s-era rock’n’roll love ballad or other tunes.

This show was especially popular with families of prisoners. His show allowed family members to dedicate songs for their loved ones.
