Woody Harrelson Pays a Surprising Visit to Inmates at UK Prison

Fancy a game of chess with Hollywood legend Woody Harrelson? This was the question posed to gobsmacked inmates at Wormwood Scrubs prison last week after the True Detective star paid them a surprise visit. Let’s explore the story behind the star’s visit and discover more about this historic UK prison.

Woody Harrelson’s Gesture of Compassion
Woody Harrelson, currently in the UK starring in a play called Ulster American, spent three hours with the criminals on behalf of a charity striving to rehabilitate offenders. The actor’s own father, Charles Voyde Harrelson, had been incarcerated before he died behind bars in 2017. Despite his son paying millions of dollars to try and clear his name, Charles ended up with two murder convictions.

Woody’s Connection to the Cause
Woody’s father, who once claimed to have assassinated US President John F. Kennedy, worked for kingpins and gangsters before his conviction. Although Woody only discovered who his dad really was when he was 12, he later became friends with his disgraced old man before he died. Understanding the struggles of those inside prisons, Woody was eager to visit HMP Wormwood Scrubs during his time in the country.

Inside HMP Wormwood Scrubs
The historic brick gatehouse is less than a 20-minute walk away from Queens Park Rangers’ Loftus Road stadium in west London and it has been home to some of Britain’s most notorious individuals. Notable inmates include serial killers Dennis Nilsen, Ian Brady, and the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe.

History and Challenges
The Grade II listed Victorian building opened in 1875 and has been a popular filming site, appearing in The Italian Job, Cass, and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. However, the prison has been plagued by troubles, including audacious escapes and rooftop protests.

Current Issues and a Hopeful Future
Wormwood Scrubs has seen its share of bad press, with reports of toothpaste that “ripped your mouth to shreds” and serious violence. Efforts have been made to address these issues, with the prison named as part of the “10 Prisons Project” in a bid to reduce drugs and violence.

Join us in commending Woody Harrelson for his compassionate gesture and hoping for a future where prisons like HMP Wormwood Scrubs can provide a safe and rehabilitative environment for their inmates.
