Sara Haines Opens Up About Postpartum Depression

Sara, 46, appeared on Behind The Table with the show’s executive producer, Brian Teta. She talked about the ups and downs of her daytime television career.

Before The View, Sara was on Good Morning America and hosted GMA’s Strahan, Sara, and Keke, with Michael Strahan and Keke Palmer.

When a fan asked if the host has a pivotal moment in her career, Sara revealed that it was when she left The View for two years.

And during those two years, the GMA show was canceled, which led her into a depression.

Struggle With Postpartum Depression

During her time off, Sara unexpectedly found out she was pregnant and went through a depression. “I had major post-partum depression as I raced back to try and save a drowning ship that was our show, six weeks after having a baby,” she told Brian.

Sara said that when she got the phone call that they weren’t bringing back the show after the pandemic, she was a wreck.

“I was so determined to not fail and to not let go,” the host said.

She believes that the GMA show didn’t reach its full potential before it was canceled. Sara shares three children with Max – Alex, Sandra, and Caleb.

Returning to Work

Sara got called back to do The View and said that she was a “shell of herself,” even though she had done the talk show before. “I was so tense that day that I didn’t know if I would remember how to do my job,” she said, her voice cracking.

“I had become really invisible in those two years, in my own mind.”

Because of her depression, she didn’t know how to do what she had been paid to do for years and couldn’t say what her own talents were.

As she talked about her thighs twitching after her first day back, Sara apologized to Brian for getting emotional. “I was in a dark place and when you’re depressed, you can’t distinguish reality from your created narratives,” Sara said, after she revealed that she cried in her dressing room everyday while on GMA.

Coming to Terms With Her Depression

Sara revealed that she has come to terms with living with Imposter Syndrome, always with those thoughts. “There are dips and days where my mind goes right back to that place and that sucks. And I think that’s where the emotion comes from,” she said.

“I feel bad how quickly I can believe these things.”
