Season 4, Episode 5 “The Crown”The story focuses on a nonroyal. We meet Michael Fagan, a local man who is down on his luck and has lost custody of his children. Fagan has also been hard hit by Britain’s economic downturn and is having difficulty finding work to pay his bills. Fagan is mad at Margaret Thatcher, the government in general, and Fagan in particular. He makes an unusual decision and breaks into Buckingham Palace twice. The Queen’s bedchambers are broken into by him twice. Fagan just wants to speak to Queen Elizabeth, and a scared Queen Elizabeth tries to call for help. Fagan tells Queen Elizabeth about his troubles with the UK’s economic and political climate in an effort to encourage her to make positive changes. Security then takes him away. This episode is an excellent way to illustrate the problem of unemployment in the UK.
But the truth is a bit less shocking. Michael Fagan was indeed illegally admitted to the palace on two occasions. According to The IndependentOn the first visit, he “tried out several of the thrones and ultimately decided to leave after no one came to find him.”Fagan’s motivation for the break-ins wasn’t overtly political. Fagan met the Queen in her bedroom on the second visit. According to news reports, the Queen had spoken with him for a long time, and he waited until her guards arrived.
